While this is a whole-faculty leadership role, the successful candidate must have the ability to teach Art & Design to GCSE and A Level or BTEC Level 3 standard, with a proven track record of strong outcomes.
You will combine deep subject expertise with whole-school strategic awareness, demonstrating the ability to lead curriculum development, secure outstanding outcomes in practical examination subjects, and build a vibrant programme of enrichment and performance. Experience leading across multiple creative disciplines is essential, with the confidence to oversee and quality assure GCSE, A Level and BTEC provision beyond your own specialism.
A strong understanding of assessment, moderation and examination standards in practical subjects is required, alongside the ability to design clear progression pathways from KS3 through to KS5. Experience reviewing and evolving curriculum models and qualification pathways will be highly valuable.
Innovation and adaptability are central to this role. We are looking for a leader who is forward-thinking, entrepreneurial and comfortable leading change. You will respond dynamically to evolving opportunities, whether productions, visiting workshops, external partnerships or high-profile collaborations, and will be confident refining systems, structures and processes to ensure sustainability and impact.
A proven track record of delivering high standards in both enrichment and examination performance is essential. You will understand how to protect curriculum time for exam cohorts while sustaining an ambitious co-curricular programme of productions, performances, workshops and exhibitions. Experience developing external partnerships and working with visiting practitioners or organisations will be highly advantageous.
Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence are critical. The successful candidate will be calm, resilient and solution-focused, able to lead through transition, manage team dynamics professionally and inspire a diverse creative faculty. Experience line managing multiple staff and contributing to whole-school improvement planning is essential. This role requires someone who thinks beyond subject silos and is comfortable engaging in strategic dialogue at senior leadership level.
Expressive Arts is highly visible within our community. The successful candidate will demonstrate a genuine willingness to contribute fully to the co-curricular life of the school, including performances, productions and key events throughout the academic year.
At DBSEH, you will join a school known for its academic ambition, its caring and inclusive ethos, and its commitment to knowing every student as an individual. With whole-school 2025 results of 51% A–A* at A Level and 85% 9–6 at GCSE, you will be joining a school with strong academic foundations and a community that takes pride in both excellence and compassion.
