Job Description

We’re looking for a Data Scientist to join the band and help drive a data-first culture within a team focused on both analysis and ML. The team’s mission is to protect the integrity of the platform from undesired behaviors like account abuse and artificial stream manipulation, via research of trends and patterns related to user behavior and methods of consumption.
You’ll be a part of a team of Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, and Data Engineers and will support the overall anti-abuse strategy at Spotify to effectively combat behavior that negatively impacts the experience of our artists, fans, and users. You will help us investigate anomalous trends, discover ways to use statistics and machine learning to improve our methods of detection, and identify unwanted behavior on the platform. Above all, your work will change the way the world experiences music and the method in which a billion fans will connect with a million artists.
This is a great way for somebody who specializes in the field of data science to jump in at the deep-end in one of the most exciting areas of the music industry.

What You’ll Do

  • Investigate groups of fraudulent users and efficacy of new signals and detection methods with the aim of enhancing our detection capabilities
  • Apply your expertise in quantitative analysis, data mining, and the presentation of data to help automate, optimize and understand key business problems and solutions
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams of data and ML engineers, analysts, user researchers, product managers and designers
  • Build and analyze dashboards, reports to empower operational and exploratory data analysis
  • Communicate insights and recommendations to key customers, engineering and product partners

Who You Are

  • A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Data Science, CS, or another quantitative field
  • You have a minimum of 4 years work experience with an emphasis on investigative data analysis, anomaly detection, and data pipelines
  • You have a deep understanding of numbers, a strong interest in research, and an experienced and mature business sense
  • Strong analytical and problem solving ability
  • You have expert level SQL and intermediate level Python skills
  • An interest in Scala is a big plus
  • Strong communication and data presentation skills (such as Tableau and / or Data Studio)
  • Experience deriving and communicating insights from complex data
  • You are a communicative person that values building strong relationships with colleagues and multiple partners, and have the ability to explain complex topics in simple terms
  • You enjoy collaborative work in a complex, data-driven, and creative environment
  • Passionate about music, data, and the captivating relationship between the two

  • We are a distributed workforce enabling our band members to find a work mode that is best for them!
  • Where in the world? For this role, it can be within the Americas region in which we have a work location and is within working hours.
  • Working hours? We operate within the Eastern Standard time zone for collaboration and ask that all team members be located in that time zone.

The United States base range for this position is $101,240 – $144,628, plus equity. The benefits available for this position include health insurance, six month paid parental leave, 401(k) retirement plan, monthly meal allowance, 23 paid days off, 13 paid flexible holidays, paid sick leave. These ranges may be modified in the future.
