Overview
We are seeking an experienced and passionate Head of Physical Education to lead and further develop the PE department for the next academic year. The successful candidate will be an outstanding practitioner with proven leadership skills and strong experience delivering GCSE and A Level Physical Education .
This is a key middle leadership role, responsible for curriculum design, teaching quality, staff development, and promoting a culture of health, fitness, and competitive sport across the school.
Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and develop the PE department across Secondary and Sixth Form
- Deliver high-quality teaching and learning in GCSE and A Level PE
- Design and implement an engaging, inclusive, and progressive PE curriculum
- Monitor student progress, assessment, and examination outcomes
- Support and mentor PE staff, including performance management and professional development
- Organise and oversee extracurricular sports programmes, fixtures, and events
- Promote student wellbeing, teamwork, and a lifelong love of physical activity
- Ensure health and safety standards are consistently met
- Contribute to whole-school initiatives and the wider life of the school
Qualifications / Skills
- A recognised teaching qualification (B Ed in Physical Education)
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
- Proven experience teaching GCSE and A Level Physical Education
- Previous experience in a leadership or coordination role within a PE department
- Strong knowledge of British curriculum requirements and examination specifications
- Excellent classroom management and organisational skills
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
- The ability to inspire students and staff through a positive, energetic leadership style
