About the job

At Google, we follow a simple but vital premise: “Focus on the user and all else will follow.” Google’s Conversation Designers leverage their knowledge of human language and communication to create seamless and natural interactions for digital systems across surfaces.

Google User Experience (UX) is made up of multi-disciplinary teams of UX Designers, Researchers, Writers, Content Strategists, Program Managers, and Engineers: we care deeply about the people who use our products. The UX team plays an integral part in gathering insights about the attitudes, emotions, and behaviors of people who use our products to inspire and inform design. We collaborate closely with each other and with engineering and product management to create industry-leading products that deliver value for the people who use them, and for Google’s businesses.

As a Conversation Designer, you’ll create conversational, voice-forward experiences across multiple surfaces, such as smart speakers, smart displays, auto, and more. You’ll work on multiple projects simultaneously, deal with cross-functional stakeholders, and provide feedback and direction to design work. Design work will include understanding product requirements and user context, and you’ll create flows, prompts, and multi-modal interaction patterns.

In this role, you will influence the future of AI by co-creating with leading external innovators to shape the direction of AI research and product development. You will be responsible for advancing UX boundaries, developing novel product surfaces, and systematically scouting or inventing product experiences that leverage emerging AI breakthroughs in meaningful ways. Additionally, you will design futuristic prototypes and facilitate co-creation sessions with partners and external trailblazing practitioners.

Labs is a group focused on incubating early-stage efforts in support of Google’s mission to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Our team exists to help discover and create new ways to advance our core products through exploration and the application of new technologies. We work to build new solutions that have the potential to transform how users interact with Google. Our goal is to drive innovation by developing new Google products and capabilities that deliver significant impact over longer timeframes.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $159,000-$231,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end design of next-generation AI creativity and learning tools, utilizing “vibe coding” and rapid prototyping to establish new design systems and interaction models across the organization.
  • Separate major design initiatives that set industry best practices, influencing high-level decision-making and shaping long-term product roadmaps through breakthrough visionary solutions.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams and external experts to transform emerging AI research into tangible product surfaces and functional prototypes.
  • Integrate insights and “deep listening” exercises with practitioner communities to ensure product features are grounded in real-world needs and deliver measurable impact.
  • Operate across multiple product areas, often adopting a Product Manager (PM) mindset to drive projects from initial concept to shipped prototypes that influence business strategy.
